How I Do Reformer Classes at Home

The question I get from friends once they find out I mostly train at home is always the same, but what do you actually do, just make it up? Fair question. Training alone sounds like it takes discipline and expertise most of us do not have after a full day of work. So here is exactly how I run my reformer classes at home, and honestly, it is easier than getting to a studio ever was.

The myth of making it up

Nobody makes it up, not even instructors. When I train at home I follow a class the same way you would in a studio, someone else plans the session, cues the moves and watches the clock, the only difference is they are on a screen instead of standing beside me. Once you realise a home class is still a class, the whole thing stops feeling intimidating.

My actual weekly routine

My week is usually three or four sessions. Two proper 30 to 45 minute classes, a quick 15 minute burn on a busy day, and a slow stretch session on Sunday if the week has been a lot. I train in the morning before work when my willpower is highest, roll the reformer out the night before, and press play before my brain can negotiate. That last trick is the whole system.

Following guided classes

A good guided class solves the two things people worry about at home, what to do and whether they are doing it right. The instructor sets the springs, paces the session and cues every rep, you just follow. I prop my phone or tablet where I can see it from the carriage, or cast to the TV for longer sessions, and the hour takes care of itself.

A home class is still a class. Someone else plans it, cues it and counts it, they are just on a screen instead of beside you.

Where the app comes in

This is exactly why we built Fit by FitBoutique, our Pilates on demand app. Guided reformer classes from world class instructors, from ten minute resets to full 45 minute burns, plus multi week programs that progress session over session so you always know what is next. It runs on your phone, tablet and TV, remembers where you left off, and it is launching very soon on iOS and Android. Join the list at fitboutique.app and you will be first through the doors.

Why home classes actually stick

Here is the honest comparison. Studio classes are wonderful, but they need booking ahead, travel time and a timetable that matches yours. My home classes need me to walk to the next room. That tiny difference is why my home practice has outlasted every membership I have ever had, the friction is simply gone, and consistency does the rest.
