What is the hardest type of Pilates?

Ever tried a Pilates move that felt impossible at first?

I have been asked countless times what the toughest Pilates workouts are, especially by people ready to take things up a notch. Pilates is not just gentle stretching or basic core work. Some moves will seriously test your strength and balance.

How do you even define hard Pilates?

When I think of challenging Pilates, it is always about moves that test core strength, balance and flexibility all at once. These exercises do not just push muscles, you feel your whole body working together. After years of practice, here are the ones that stand out.

The Snake and Twist

If you have ever struggled with a basic plank, the snake and twist will find your limits. You balance your whole body weight with precision, then rotate your torso while holding form. It challenges your obliques, arms and entire core, and it is genuinely intense.

The Teaser

The teaser looks straightforward until you try it. Lying flat, you lift your upper body and legs at the same time into a V shape. Holding that position tests core strength and flexibility, especially done slowly. Whenever someone wants to level up, this is my first suggestion.

If you want to work on reformer variations, I like practising the teaser on the Onyx Reformer, which is stable enough for demanding moves at home.

The Control Balance

This advanced move takes the classic rollover and adds real complexity. You balance your body weight across your shoulders while alternating legs overhead. It is fantastic for spinal flexibility and balance, but it demands control to do safely.

Is reformer Pilates harder?

People often ask whether reformer Pilates is harder than mat work. Honestly, it depends. The reformer can either support you or challenge you more than the mat, and that is the beauty of the springs. Moves like the long stretch series really test stability and upper body strength in a way the mat cannot.

If you want to add intensity to your sessions, the jumpboard and box opens up dynamic, athletic work, and one comes included with every machine in our reformer range. My guide on how to maximise your reformer for full body conditioning covers how to use it well.

The hardest moves according to everyone I ask

The moves that come up again and again are the Jackknife, the Swan Dive and the Boomerang. The Jackknife in particular demands strength, balance and flexibility in equal measure, lifting your legs and hips straight up without losing form. The Boomerang is another people find tricky, effectively combining the teaser and rollover into one flowing sequence, so it tests coordination as much as strength.

Are advanced moves for everyone?

I am all for pushing your limits, but safely. Advanced moves need physical strength and proper guidance, which is exactly why working up gradually and perfecting the basics first matters so much.

If you are earlier in your journey, start with these reformer exercises to strengthen your core and build from there.

Taking your practice further

Pilates is about personal progression, so even if these moves seem intimidating now, you will surprise yourself with practice. Quality equipment genuinely helps, because a stable machine lets you attempt harder work with confidence. If you have a dedicated space, The Studio Reformer and Space Black in our studio range give you that planted, commercial grade feel. If your machine needs to pack away, the foldable range performs identically and folds upright when you are done.

Feel free to reach out through our contact page if you have questions about progressing or choosing equipment for your level.

Pilates is challenging, and that is exactly what makes it rewarding.

KEY SUMMARY
